What to Look for When Touring an Assisted Living Community

What to look for when touring an assisted living community

Choosing an assisted living community for yourself or a loved one can be overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. There are important things to look for and questions to ask during your tour. Keeping these factors in mind can help reduce any stress you may be feeling, giving you more confidence to make an informed decision.

What to Look for in an Assisted Living Community Tour

In preparation for your tour, take some time to sit down and draft a checklist of must-haves. Your list might include amenities, features, services, floor plans, activities, and dining options that are important to you or your loved one.

You’ll also want to keep your budget in mind and determine what is included in the monthly fee and what add-on costs may be incurred.

Before your visit, create another list of things you’d like to see and interactions you’d like to observe while you’re there. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

  • How are you greeted upon arrival?
  • How do the staff and residents interact with each other?
  • How is the food? Plan your visit during a meal to see the menus and taste the food.
  • Are residents participating in activities? Ask for a copy of the current activity calendar to see what opportunities are available for residents.
  • Are there outdoor spaces where residents can gather or enjoy nature?
  • Are the grounds landscaped nicely and clear of overgrown plants and weeds?
  • Are the common areas and restrooms clean?
  • Do the residents seem happy living there? Ask to be introduced to some residents and find out what their experience has been like.
  • Do the staff seem friendly and content with their work? Ask to meet a few team members to get an inside look at the culture of the community.

What Questions to Ask During Your Personalized Visit

To ensure you get your questions answered during your personalized tour, prepare a list of questions, and bring the list to your visit. You’ll be less likely to feel overwhelmed trying to remember what to look for and what to ask when you have your notes in front of you.

Consider asking the following questions during your assisted living community tour:

  • What supportive care services are available?
  • What amenities can residents enjoy while living there?
  • Who manages the community? Research the community online through reviews on social media, Google, and more.
  • How many residents live in the community?
  • Are there available apartments, or is there a waiting list? If there is a waiting list, how long should I expect to wait for an opening?
  • Do you have a high turnover of staff?
  • What are the costs of living here?
  • Are there a variety of floor plans to choose from?
  • Can friends and family visit?
  • Are pets allowed in the community?
  • Are there multiple dining venues?
  • Are grab-and-go snacks available throughout the day and evening?
  • What happens if my care needs change? Are there services available so I can remain in the community and age in place?

Firsthand experiences with the community are usually the most accurate. Try to chat with residents who live there and ask their loved ones if they’d recommend the assisted living community to others.

It’s also helpful to check with family members, friends, and trusted advisors like financial planners or your attorney. Consider feedback from others to provide additional perspectives when making your decision.
